May Newsletter 2021
It’s already Week 3 and we are well and truly into the swing of things. We recently held our school ANZAC Day service and I would like to thank our special guests for making this a memorable occasion for all who attended. A big thank you to Mr McKimm for his efforts in organising as well as our student leaders for hosting so beautifully. A special thank you to Lucy in 6M for playing the Last Post during this commemoration. I was extremely impressed by the respect and maturity shown by all our students at this important event.
The roofs on A block and the school library are due to be repaired in the coming weeks, with work expected to be completed by the end of the term. Additionally, work is due to begin on the side oval in preparation for the installation of our new Before and After School Care hub. To minimise the impact on playing area on the side oval, the new building will be located where the current play equipment is, with the equipment to be relocated towards the top of the side oval. An additional gate will also be installed on Excelsior Rd, close to the building, for easier access when dropping off and picking up.
Strategic Improvement Plan
At the end of Term 1 we completed our Strategic Improvement Plan for 2021 to 2024. All public schools complete this plan to drive improvement in the school. Our school has three strategic directions which are:
Strategic Direction 1: Student growth and attainment
Purpose: To improve numeracy (2021-2022) and reading achievement across the school through targeted and differentiated tasks based around high expectations, supported by instructional leaders and collaborative planning.
Strategic Direction 2: Data Informed Practices
Purpose: To embed consistent school-wide practices to ensure data and assessment are used as tools to move learning forward, monitor student progress overtime and inform future directions.
Strategic Direction 3: Student Wellbeing through student voice and student engagement
Purpose: To embed a strategic and planned approach to school wellbeing processes so that students can connect, succeed, thrive and learn by ensuring the cognitive, social, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing of all students is addressed through student voice and engagement.
These three areas will be a focus for school improvement and professional learning for teachers over the next four years. More information about our Strategic Improvement Plan 2021 – 2024 is available on the school website.
Now that the tender process has been finalised, I would like to recognise and thank Mimi’s OOSH service, particularly Mel and her staff, for providing quality care for children in the Cronulla community for the past 18 years.
Mimis OOSH will continue to provide before and after school care until the final day of school this term. Regular updates will be provided to families about how the transition between services will occur and how to ensure you can access the care you need for your children.
A very special thank you to Mr Simon Hamad for his generous donation of several boxes of fruit for the Year 6 camp.
School Community Support
Thank you to the school community for your generous donations for the recent Easter fundraisers. The P&C raised $4400 which has been allocated to purchasing new reading resources for the school.
NAPLAN 2021 – Years 3 and 5
Years 3 and 5 will participate in NAPLAN Online between 11 – 21 May. NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows schools and parents to see how students are progressing against national standards in literacy and numeracy and over time. All the tests will be completed online except for Year 3 writing.
In advance of taking NAPLAN Online, students and parents are invited to use the public demonstration tests to familiarise themselves with the type of questions and related functionalities available in the NAPLAN Online assessment.
Some of the key features include a range of question types, onscreen tools, timers and interactive navigation. Students are encouraged to try all the tests for their year level to practise the complete range of question formats available in the online assessment. https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site

ANZAC Day report
On Friday the 23rd April Cronulla Public School conducted its annual ANZAC Day Ceremony. The service was very well lead by our school leaders: Indiana H, Charlie R, Tane R and Willow J. Students were extremely respectful and reverent.
We were extremely privileged to have in attendance Sergeant Spencer and Chief Petty Officer Corcoran. Sergeant Spencer gave an address to the school where he encouraged students to live out the ANZAC legacy in their own day to day actions.
On Sunday the 25th April our school leaders felt extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to lay a wreath, on behalf of the school, in remembrance, at the Cronulla RSL service at Munro Park. It was lovely to see so many CPS families in attendance at the service.
Mother’s Day Stall
A Mother’s Day stall is being held tomorrow. Thank you to the P&C for organising this event. The children will be able to purchase a present for their ‘special ‘person.
Gifts will be priced from $2 to $10.
Mother’s Day High Tea
To recognise and celebrate our Mothers and Grandmothers a very special event will be held.
Mothers and Grandmothers have been invited to a High Tea on Thursday 5th May 2.30pm in the school hall. We look forward to sharing the afternoon with them.
Cyber Safety Parent Information Session
Parents and carers are invited to attend a one-hour information session on Cyber Safety on Wednesday 19th May, 2021 at 2:25pm. The session will be conducted by the Youth Liaison Officer Deb Wilson from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command. During the information session a range of topics will be discussed such as internet safety, cyber bullying and responsible use of the internet. The session will be held in the school hall. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to the school office by Friday May 14th.
As the weather starts to become cooler it will be necessary to wear school jackets and jumpers. A timely reminder to ensure all clothing is clearly labelled as it is very easy to misplace items.
Students are currently transitioning into winter uniforms by Monday 17th May.
Kindergarten Enrolments for 2022
Information regarding children who will start Kindergarten next year is now available. Tours and interviews are presently being held for prospective parents. Parents of children enrolling in Kindergarten 2022 are asked to kindly collect an enrolment form and details of the upcoming parent information and transition sessions from the office. When completed please return the enrolment form as soon as possible.

National Consistent Collection of Data 2021
It is a requirement for all schools in Australia to participate in a national data collection for students who have educational adjustments.
All students who have adjustments to their learning or are supported at school are included in the data collection. The primary areas include physical, cognitive, sensory and social/emotional support.
The level of adjustment for each area can be
• Support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice
• Supplementary adjustments
• Substantial adjustments
• Extensive adjustments
Information regarding the area and level of adjustment for students is required to be collected by the school. For the purposes of the national data collection students are identified as requiring an adjustment under the Disability Discrimination ACT 1992 (DDA) using the Disability standards.
For example: students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, speech delays or chronic health conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes or asthma that require active monitoring by the school may be included.

Intention to apply for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2022
A note regarding 2022 opportunity classes was sent out to Year 4 students yesterday.
Opportunity classes cater for academically gifted and high potential students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Successful students will usually have to leave their current school to enrol in a school with an opportunity class for Years 5 and 6.
Testing and assessment
Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. Students who wish to be considered for opportunity class placement will sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Wednesday 21 July 2021.
How to apply
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2021, you need to apply between Tuesday 20 April 2021 and Friday 7 May 2021. You will need to access the online application at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5. You must not use the child’s email address.
If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team for assistance after Tuesday 20 April 2021.
You must submit only ONE application for each student.
Important – the school cannot apply on your behalf. Should you have any questions, please refer to flyer at the end of Newsletter.
Work Health and Safety Review
The annual WHS review for the school is currently being undertaken. At this time, the school Emergency Management Plan, First Aid Plans and the Management Action Plan are reviewed. Parents are requested to notify the office if your child has any changes to their individual health care needs.
Year 5 Camp to Canberra and Snowy Mountains
Year 5 will participate in a 4 day, 3 night visit to Canberra and the Snowy Mountains on Mon 13th – Thurs 16th September.
Details and information regarding the camp and cost of the excursion has been sent home this term. Please see the office for further information.
Easter Raffle & Hot Cross Bun Drive Fundraisers
The P&C would like to sincerely thank everyone for their generous donations for our Easter Egg Raffle and your support of the Hot Cross Bun drive! We raised an amazing $4400!!
Outgoing P&C Office Holders
Jodie & Graham Smith have been involved in the P&C for many years in many roles. Having vacated their seats as secretary and president this year as their child comes to the end of her time at Cronulla PS, they have left very big shoes to fill. The school has benefited from Graham’s considered and consistent leadership of the P&C and Jodie’s help with almost every P&C event as well as all our behind the scenes administration. Heartfelt thanks to both Jodie and Graham for your service and friendship over the years.
Leanne Well has also vacated her seat this year in preparation for her son to also start High School in 2022. Leanne is a 1 woman raffle and uniform dynamo. Leanne lead Technology raffle for many years coordinating many of the school community to raise tens of thousands of dollars and equip the school with computers and technology that would rival any other school. Leanne’s focus on having technology accessible to all children drove her to both conceive of and pull off 2 huge fundraisers over consecutive years. Leanne has also coordinated our second hand uniform store and other uniform initiatives for many years. It is with sadness and the greatest amount of gratitude that we say goodbye to Leanne from her P&C roles and value how much she has contributed to the school over the years.
Most of you know Reagan Grimley as the face of our P&C events. Having coordinated everything from Easter Raffles, Mothers & Father’s Day stalls, trivia Nights etc… she is very deserving of a break. You will still see Reagan supporting the incoming team with her experience and knowledge. Many of the improvements that the P&C have funded over many years are thanks to Reagan’s commitment and diligence. We hope to see you back on board in years to come Reagan but for not now it’s a very big heartfelt, thank you!
We welcome you to our inaugural P&C meeting at Cronulla RSL tonight at 7:00pm. Grab a drink and join us to hear about what’s going on at school. You won’t roped into anything you don’t want to do, promise!

Many of you will have noticed our new uniform cabinet next to the canteen. It is with great thanks to Leanne Wells, our long serving outgoing uniform coordinator, that the cabinet was designed and installed and hence has been named “Wells Cabinet”

The Annual Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Wednesday 5th May. There will be lots of great presents for children to purchase from $2 – $10.

Zone Cross Country Canteen – Monday May 10th
What is the Zone Cross Country Canteen?
It is a day where the P&C team and parents transport our BBQ, marquees, food and drinks to the Zone Cross Country venue at Miranda Park and create a Pop-up canteen. We provide cold drinks, lollies, snacks, bacon & egg rolls and a Sausage sizzle for all attending the event. Parents, grandparents and friends help serve throughout the day then we pack it up and bring it all back to school again!
This is a great Fundraising opportunity for the school and each year we ask our school community to assist us with donations. We are looking for drinks, snacks, lollies and healthy snacks and baked goods. All donated goods must be nut free and individually packaged. For example multi packs of chips, biscuits and popcorn. Cans of drinks & bottled water.
This year we are asking families for donations of specific items depending on your child’s year. This is to make it easier to know what to buy, or you can join with another family to share costs and we get a good variety of items! Those families with multiple children, we would only ask you donate one item. (Donations are optional but much appreciated).
Zone Cross Country Carnival Donations
As we did in 2019, we are asking each stage to make specific donations so we have a range of things to sell on the day:
Early Stage 1 K: small packets of chips
Stage 1 Yr 1&2: lollies and chocolates
Stage 2 Yr 3&4: Soft drinks / Gatorade / Water
Stage 3 Yr 5&6: small packets of cookies / Oreos / Rice Wheels etc
Any donations are greatly appreciated.
If you would like to contribute please leave your donations in the office by Thursday 6th May.
Additionally, we are kindly asking parents & friends to help volunteer on the day to help staff the canteen. We need two/three parents serving and 1 parent on the BBQ as well as people to help set up and pack away. Please contact the school if you are able to help on the day.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Challenge is still open! Don’t forget to keep reading PRC books and add titles to Student Reading Records. The final date to enter books is Friday 20th August. Students who are seen to be actively participating in the Challenge and adding books will be invited to a special incentive PRC event soon.
Story and Surprise
Story and Surprise is continuing this term for interested Kindergarten and Year 1 students during the second half of lunch every Monday. Students listen to a story then receive a little ‘surprise’ to remind them of the story. Our first story for the term was ‘ANZAC Biscuits’ and students received toy soldier as their surprise.
Walkers, Wrigglers and Crawlers
It has been wonderful welcoming back our Walkers, Wrigglers and Crawlers every Friday morning at 9:25am. We read stories, sing songs and borrow a book. If you have a child or children not yet at school, please feel very welcome to join us.
Night @ the Museum
Stage 1 are talking all things dinosaur in library lessons this term. Students received a note about our Night @ the Museum and are excited about completing a dinosaur model of some description at home to show in the museum. A second note will be sent home with more details but the date has been chosen! Wednesday 9th June (week 8) 5:30pm – 6:30pm

CPS Wellbeing Library
A resource bank has been established, and will be built on, to assist teachers, parents and carers in supporting our students to establish protective factors for good mental health and wellbeing in a way that promotes respectful relationships, belonging and inclusion.
We have dedicated an area in the Staff Room to provide books, that in some way, deal with a range of concerns, issues, situations and life occurrences including anxiety, worry, stress, divorce, friendships, moods, and death. These will be accessible to not only students, but also parents, families and teachers. This section features a range of texts dealing with issues that kids and families face in their lifetimes. Suggestions of additional texts are welcomed.
Through literature, children can understand that they are not alone in encountering problems and feelings. Stories and illustrations can be the catalyst that parents and teachers need to draw out conversation with kids as they go through challenging circumstances.
Sometimes it can be hard for parents and teachers to find the right words to offer support and guidance and literature can help to better understand and relate to children’s feelings particularly as children are familiar and comfortable with books and stories.
Please feel free to contact your child’s class teacher, the teacher librarian or the school counsellor for any suggestions or advice on these texts. They are available for parents to loan.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be attending the Cronulla Public School Athletics Carnival at Sylvania Waters Athletics Field on Tuesday 1st June, 2021. Students who are 8 years or above will have the opportunity to join the Primary carnival and compete in track and field events. Students under 8 years will participate in modified events and activities. Further information regarding the carnival was sent home last week.
On Monday 26th April, 5 students from Cronulla P.S represented the Cronulla Zone in the Robert Stone Memorial Shield (Sydney East Trials) at Heffron Park in Maroubra. The boys played against other Zones from the Sydney East area including; Canterbury/Wiley Park (Bulldogs), Western Suburbs (West Tigers), Sydney Coastal (Roosters), South Sydney (Rabbitohs), Georges River (Dragons) and Sutherland/Engadine (Sharks).
All 5 students participated with great competitive spirit and helped to take both the under 11’s and 12’s teams to the final, with the u/12’s successful in winning the shield for the Cronulla Zone. It was a fantastic day of footy and all 5 students are commended on their wonderful efforts leading up to the day and on it.
Well done Braxton M, Josh C, Kash L and Hayden M for your efforts and an extended congratulations to Cooper R for his success in being selected in the u/11’s Sydney East team. Cooper will now represent Sydney East at the NSW State carnival at Kiama in June.
Last week, Charlie R participated for Sydney East at the NSWPSSA Boys Basketball Championships in Terrigal. The Sydney East team played superbly over the 3 day event and made it through to the State Final, an absolutely massive achievement. In the final they came up against a very strong Sydney North team who were victorious on the day.
Congratulations Charlie, your hard work both on and off the court shine through always. We are proud to have you as our School Captain. Well done!
Thank you to all students, teachers and parents who have participated and contributed to Running Club in Term 1. It has been a hugely successful term of training and we look forward to seeing everybody again in Term 2 as we switch our focus from Cross Country training to preparing for sprinting at our school Athletics Carnival. Premier’s Sporting Challenge Sport Leadership Learning to Lead
Cronulla Public School will continue our participation in the NSW Department of Education and Training’s Premier’s Sporting Challenge Sport Leadership ‘Learning to Lead Program’ for 2021
Students from Year 5 and Year 6 who express an interest in sport and physical activity in the role of organiser (administration), leader (beginner coach) or official (referee/umpire) can be involved.
As part of this program these students volunteer their time to distribute sports equipment and organise or referee a small game for younger students one lunch time a week. They may also be asked to assist teachers to set up sport or fitness activities and demonstrate skills.
Year 5 and Year 6 students are invited to apply in writing or by email to Mrs Williamson by Friday 20th May to be a member of the team. They are asked to address the following criteria:
- Why would you like to be a member of the Learning to Lead team?
- How can you contribute to sport as a leader at Cronulla Public School?
- What leadership qualities do you have?
The students will be announced at the Friday assembly in Week 6 Friday 27th May. If they are successful in being selected they will receive a permission note for the training workshop which will be held at Cronulla Public School on –Tuesday 15th June.
Sutherland to Surf
In 2020 COVID 19 prevent all of us from competing in the Sutherland to Surf. It really is one of the premier fun runs in the country, so in 2021 Cronulla Public School will be once again entering the Sutherland to Surf as a team. As a school we will be aiming to have the largest school based team in the history of the race.
What is it? It is a timed 11km run or walk from Sutherland to the Wanda Surf Life Saving Club.
When is it? Sunday 18th July.
Cost? Early bird entry fees are available, please check the website for costs.
Do I have to be fast? No not at all. You are encouraged to go at whatever pace feels comfortable.
How do I participate? Families will need to register online at the Sutherland to Surf website
When families register, please search for the team name: Cronulla Public School and also select Runners Team as our team category. Once registered, families will receive a bib in the mail and will have their time recorded. Without a bib you will not be allowed to compete.
All family members and friends are more than welcome to join and represent our school team. You do not just have to be a student at the school to run for us.
Any students who attend will need to be under the full supervision of their parents or guardians. They will not be the responsibility of any teachers in attendance. Families should think very carefully about younger students entering, as 11km is a tough distance for some little legs to finish.
It is recommended that students and families, if time permits, participate in some extra training sessions between now and the Sutherland to Surf.
Term 2 PSSA and School Sport
This term, PSSA sport is a competitive season. This means that students will be chosen to participate in a team based on the sporting trials, which will be held on Friday of weeks 1 and 2. The sports that students will have the opportunity to trial for are Rugby League, Soccer and Netball. All of these sports are mixed gender. The season will begin in week 3 and continue through until week 10 for a duration of 8 weeks.
Students who remain at school on Friday for School Sport will participate in a range of sporting activities, including, a soccer program led by instructors from Sydney FC and a Golf program led by Golf NSW.
Rugby League: Students who are chosen to participate in this sport are required to bring and wear a mouth guard each week. Failure to do so means the student will not be able to take the field. This sport is a contact sport and like many contact sports there is risk of injury when participating. Students will play at multiple venues and travel via bus each week. Approximately 32 students will be participating in this sport, making 1 junior (years 3-4) and 1 senior (years 5-6) team.
Soccer: Students who are chosen to participate in this sport are required to bring and wear a shin pads each week. Failure to do so means the student will not be able to take the field. Students will play at multiple venues and travel via bus each week. Approximately 60 students will be participating in this sport making 2x junior and 2x senior teams.
Netball: All games for netball will be held at Bellingarra netball courts in Miranda. Approximately 36 students will be attending with 2 x junior and 2 x senior teams.
More information including the draw and specific venues will be communicated to students and parents when teams are selected.
We look forward to another wonderful term of sport and are excited to have parents and spectators attend games.

Night of Stars
We are looking forward to once again being able to showcase our talented students at our annual Night of Stars. This year the evening will be held in Term 3 at Cronulla High School on Tuesday 7th September. Further information regarding the night will be published next term.
Dancesport lessons commenced on Monday 26th April (Week 2 Term 2) at lunchtime in the hall. Students will need to bring their lunch to the hall at the beginning of lunch. The duration of the lessons will be 1 hour.
If your child is still interested in participating any student in Years 4/5 and 6 are welcome to attend.

We continue to streamline how we communicate with you at Cronulla Public School. To ensure we make the best possible effort to communicate with every family, we publish the school newsletter, Cronulla Catch Up, important dates and alerts via our SkoolBag App. All school communication that is made via this app will come directly to your phone as both a push alert and an email.
Downloading the app is the preferred method as it will allow you to choose grades and groups and it will automatically add you to the SkoolBag email list. Please be aware that you must subscribe to either the SkoolBag app or SkoolBag email list to receive our communication.

Walk Safely to School Day Friday 14th May
Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event when all primary school children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment.
WSTSD promotes the important message that active kids are healthy kids. The event encourages parents, carers and their children to build regular walking to and from school into their daily routine. Children need a minimum of 60 minutes exercise per day. Encouraging less driving and more walking aims to decrease dangerous vehicle congestion around schools and reduce carbon emissions from idling cars. Lastly, it is just a nice way to be part of your community.

WHAT IS THE NATIONAL DATA COLLECTION?
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (the national data collection) is an annual collection that counts the number of school students receiving an adjustment due to disability and the level of reasonable adjustment they are receiving.
The national data collection counts students who have been identified by a school team as receiving an adjustment to address a disability as defined under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (the DDA). The DDA can be accessed from the ComLaw website at www.comlaw.gov.au.
what is the benefit for my child?
The aim of the national data collection is to collect quality information about school students receiving an adjustment due to disability in Australia.
This information will help teachers, principals, education authorities and families to better support students with disability to take part in school on the same basis as other students.
The national data collection provides an opportunity for schools to review their learning and support systems and processes to continually improve education outcomes for their students with disability.
WHY IS THIS DATA BEING COLLECTED?
All schools across Australia collect information about students with disability. But the type of information currently collected varies between each state and territory and across government, Catholic and independent school sectors.
When undertaking the national data collection, every school in Australia uses the same method to collect information. Therefore, a government school in suburban Sydney collects and submits data in the same way as a Catholic school in country Victoria and an independent school in the Northern Territory.
The annual collection aims to, over time, lead to nationally consistent, high quality data that will enable schools, education authorities and governments to gain a more complete understanding of students who are receiving adjustments because of disability in schools in Australia, and how to best support them.
WHAT ARE SCHOOLS REQUIRED TO DO FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY?
All students are entitled to a quality learning experience at school.
Schools are required to make reasonable adjustments, where needed, to assist students with disability to access and participate in education free from discrimination and on the same basis as other students.
These responsibilities are outlined in the DDA and the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the Standards). The Standards require educators, students, parents and others (e.g. allied health professionals) to work together so that students with disability can participate in education.

WHAT IS A REASONABLE ADJUSTMENT?
A reasonable adjustment is a measure or action taken to help a student with disability access and participate in education on the same basis as other students. Reasonable adjustments reflect the assessed individual needs of the student, and are provided in consultation with the student and/or their parents and carers. Reasonable adjustments can be made across the whole school setting (e.g. ramps into school buildings), in the classroom (such as adapting teaching methods) and at an individual student level (e.g. extra tuition for a student with learning difficulties).
What information will be collected?
Every year your child’s school will collect the following information for each student receiving an adjustment due to disability:
- the student’s level of education (i.e. primary or secondary)
- the student’s level of adjustment
- the student’s broad type of disability.
The information collected by schools will be available to all governments to inform policy and program improvement for students with disability.
WHO IS INCLUDED IN THE NATIONAL DATA COLLECTION?
The definition of disability for the national data collection is based on the broad definition under the DDA.
For the purposes of the national data collection, students with learning difficulties, such as dyslexia or auditory processing disorder, as well as chronic health conditions like epilepsy or diabetes, that require monitoring and the provision of adjustments by the school, may be included.
Who collects information FOR THE NATIONAL DATA COLLECTION?
Teachers and school staff count the number of students receiving an adjustment due to disability in their school, and the level of reasonable adjustment they are provided, based on:
- consultation with parents and carers in the course of determining and providing reasonable adjustments
- the school team’s observations and professional judgements
- any medical or other professional diagnosis
- other relevant information.
School principals are responsible for ensuring the information identified about each student is accurate.
How IS my child’s privacy protected?
Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all students and their families is essential and is an explicit focus of the national data collection. Personal details, such as student names or other identifying information, are not provided to local or federal education authorities.

IS THE NATIONAL DATA COLLECTION COMPULSORY?
Yes. All education ministers agreed to full implementation of the national data collection from 2015. This means that all schools must now collect and submit information annually on the number of students receiving adjustments due to disability in their care, and the level of adjustment they receive.
Information about the arrangements that may apply to your school in relation to this data collection is available from your child’s school principal and the relevant education authority.
